Valletta is the capital city of Malta and has 6985 inhabitants. Malta is an island in the centre of the Mediterranean. Sicily is just 60 miles to the north, North Africa 170 miles to the south.
The walled city of Valletta started in 1566 on Mount Sceberras peninsula and with the help of a great military engineer Francesco Laparelli whose services were loaned along with financial aid by King Philip of Spain and Pope Pius V, was finished in an extraordinary short amount of time. It took the Knights only 15 years to build the
city for gentlemen with bastions, forts and a grand cathedral. In World War II Valletta was badly damaged but the city managed to survive the war with many of its treasures intact. Today Valletta is a world heritage city, a bustling place as the island's main business centre and the seat of government.
