Lucca, is a charming and elegant small city in Tuscany. It has a population of approx. 87.000 people. It is comfortably located between the better-known cities of Florence and Pisa. Lucca was a Roman town and due to this, it still keeps the original Roman structure with its narrow roads surrounded by the three circles of walls. It is encircled by 16th century walls that embrace the old medieval city and that for the most part, no cars are permitted inside of them. These walls are nearly 4 km long and intact and strong, in fact the most intact of any of the defensive walls within Italy. The streets are enriched with many palaces, museums and very many Romanesque churches. Lucca is the birth place of the composer Giacomo Puccini. The city is a marketing centre for olive oil, vegetables and wine. Industries include the manufacture of tobacco products, food products, textiles, paper and furniture.
